This pyx (a vessel in which the eucharistic host is kept) was a gift from the Cistercian nun Margarete Pfrumborn to her nunnery in Lichtental, near Baden-Baden. She is therefore shown on the front in the company of the Magi adoring the Virgin and Child. On the right is St Bernard of Clairvaux, founder of the Cistercian order.
